Every layoff we track gets an AI score from 0 to 100: how strongly the public evidence (company statements, SEC filings, WARN notices, major-outlet reporting) ties that layoff to AI. The score comes from a published model fitted to hand-labeled cases. It is an estimate, not a measured probability and not a finding of cause.
The Index adds those scores up in workers: Σ (counted workers × AI score ÷ 100) over every tracked layoff dated in the period. A 1,000-person layoff scored 90 adds 900. A 1,000-person layoff scored 5 adds 50. A layoff with no confirmed headcount adds 0 until a number is confirmed. We never guess headcounts.
Coverage is the tracker: WARN notices from 16 U.S. states, SEC filings, and company and news announcements worldwide (1,509 events so far in 2026). It counts tracked layoffs, not every job in the economy. It's a different thing from Challenger, Gray & Christmas's count of U.S. cuts where employers cite AI.
How the weekly history is built: each week's number is recomputed from the current data on every rebuild, grouped by each event's announcement or filing date. Nothing is back-filled or estimated. Because WARN notices arrive late and scores are refit, past weeks get restated, so the CSV is the latest version, not a record of earlier releases.
The year-to-date Index at the last build of each week, as it stood at the time (not restated). This log starts with the week of Oct 19, 2026, the first week with a saved build. Earlier weeks exist only in the restated series above.
